DULUTH, Minn. – Police investigating an alleged murder find “satanic symbols and phrases” spray-painted inside the home.
Duluth Police officers reported finding “go to hell” and “several other satanic symbols and phrases” spray-painted inside a residence on Saturday, where a 74-year-old woman was found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The woman’s son, Nathan Douglas Davin, 46, who lives with his mother, is now charged with her murder.
According to the probable cause statement, officers were called to 1511 N 9th Ave. E at around 10:51 p.m. Saturday, for a reported fatality. The caller, a neighbor’s daughter, told dispatch that Davin knocked on their door and appeared impaired. The neighbor’s daughter claimed he was only wearing boxer shorts and said, “something about a fatality.”
Officers arrived at 1511, where Davin answered the door with what appeared to be blood on his hands, according to the criminal complaint. When asked why he had blood on his hands, Davin reportedly said, “I found my mom f***ing dead.”
The victim was found in the living room, sitting in a recliner with “a devastating gunshot wound to her face.” Police reported finding a spent pistol casing on the floor, along with a bullet “near the exit wound in the victim’s hair.”
The complaint alleged that Davin told police he woke up to his mother in that condition. When officers detained Davin and put him in a squad car, he was reportedly recorded making statements such as “wake up to bullsh**” and “there went my life.”
During a safety sweep, officers saw “go to hell” and “several other satanic symbols and phrases” spray-painted around the inside of the house.
In Davin’s bedroom, multiple firearms in an unlocked safe and two pistols on a nightstand were found by officers. One pistol, a Glock 9mm, “appeared to have blood on it,” according to the complaint. Also in the bedroom was Sig Sauer Elite Defense ammunition, “which matched the rounds located in the pistol, the spent casing, and a live round,” found in the living room.
Officers spoke over the phone with the owner of the neighboring residence. He said his daughter, who was housesitting, called him to say “that his neighbor was acting different.” The neighbor tried calling Davin and his mother multiple times, but nobody answered.
Davin called back a few minutes later, asking the neighbor to come over, but hung up abruptly when learning he was out of town. Shortly after the first call, Davin called again and reportedly said, “My mom’s dead, she blew her head off” before hanging up.
When officers attempted to interview Davin, he declined and requested a lawyer. Search warrants showed that police took samples of Davin’s DNA and his boxers, which reportedly had blood on them.
While at the Public Safety Building, Davin was left alone in an interview room where a camera allegedly captured him saying, “God damn it, I killed my mother.”
Preliminary examination of the victim’s wound showed the bullet took “a downward trajectory.” Search warrants revealed that officers located an apparent bullet hole in the front porch of the home, indicating a possible second shot being fired.
Other than an attempted vehicle theft in 1997 and multiple DWI convictions over the years, Davin has no significant criminal history. Davin is charged with second-degree murder and faces a maximum possible sentence of 40 years in prison. His bail is set at $750,000.
