DULUTH, Minn. – A man was left “covered head to toe in blood” after an assault in the East Hillside neighborhood last Friday, Duluth Police say.
A man is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend with a knife, leaving the victim “covered head to toe in blood,” a criminal complaint alleged. Daniel James Barney, 40, reportedly tried to stab the man during an altercation that occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. on July 25, near the 900 block of East 3rd Street in Duluth.
The male victim and his girlfriend told Duluth Police that they had been walking back from the Speedway gas station prior to the assault, when the woman saw and recognized her ‘ex’ (Barney) walking nearby. According to the complaint, when the couple ”saw [Barney], and they followed him until he rounded the corner on 3rd Street and he stopped and turned around.”
The couple said Barney then approached them and told the man, “that if he set his dog on him, he would stab it.” Barney then reportedly “produced a knife and came at [the Victim] trying to stab him.” The male claimed that the knife slipped out of Barney’s hands when he swung it towards him.
Authorities said that a “multitool with the knife blade out and bent was located at the scene.”
Responding officers reported that the male victim was “covered head to toe in blood.” A search warrant related to the case revealed the man “had visible swelling on his face,” “burst blood vessels in his left eye,” and a “small but heavily bloody cut on his hand.”
Barney is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence, according to court filings. These charges carry a maximum combined sentence of 12 years in prison.
